Situation Update from the CDC

Map of flu activity in the U.S.Flu Activity: According to the final FluView for the 2009-2010 influenza season (May 16–22, 2010), flu activity in the United States declined again from the previous week and is about the same as what is normally seen during the summer in the United States. Only a small number of influenza viruses are being reported, most of which are 2009 H1N1. Flu is unpredictable, but sporadic cases of flu, caused by either 2009 H1N1 or seasonal flu viruses, will likely continue to occur throughout the summer in the United States. Internationally, 2009 H1N1 viruses are still circulating, including in the Southern Hemisphere, which is entering its flu season. For more information, please see the international situation update.

A Pandemic Is Declared...

On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a global pandemic of novel influenza A (H1N1) was underway by raising the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6This action was a reflection of the spread of the new H1N1 virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus. At the time, more than 70 countries had reported cases of novel influenza A (H1N1) infection and there were ongoing community level outbreaks of novel H1N1 in multiple parts of the world.

Tick-Transmitted Diseases

03/22/2010

Tick-transmitted disease season has arrived. Recent warm weather has brought out the blacklegged ticks (also known as deer ticks). The ticks become active when temperatures climb above freezing. While much larger numbers of ticks are found during the peak of the tick-transmitted disease season from May through early July, it is also important to protect yourself now from the ticks if you spend time in wooded or brushy habitat used by the ticks.

A variety of diseases may be spread by ticks in Minnesota. The majority of tick-transmitted diseases result from the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (also known as the deer tick). Preventing exposure to blacklegged ticks requires diligence.

Diseases that can be Transmitted by Ticks
Most tick bites do not result in disease, but it is a good idea to recognize and watch for the early symptoms of the more commonly encountered tick-transmitted diseases in Minnesota.
